Big Sisters

Having a big sister around is having someone who will take care of you like a mother, but who will understand you and your woes like a sister. A big sister's role is to provide protection, an extension of being a mother. Although it has been said that a big sister understands her siblings more than their mother as they are of the same age.

Having a big sister is not just limited to a biological sister. As there are big sister-little sister programs which allow for those who do not have a big sister to experience how it is like to have a big sister. While a big sister in the big sister program is not biological, the experience will tell you that the kindred the people in the program share is similar to a biological sister. Big sisters promote the interests of their siblings, especially their little sisters and their little brothers. The affection and the bond shared by a big sister is incomparable.

While the traditional landscape of extremely tight knit families are slowly changing and becoming very similar to that of the Western tradition, interaction between big sisters and their siblings in India remains pretty much the same as in traditions past.
